St John's supports 'mission' in a variety of ways some of which are listed below.

Waskia Bible Translation and Literacy Project (Papua New Guinea)

Licensed Lay Minister at St Johns, Jan Lee, re-engaged in 2007 with the Waskia language group people of Karkar Island, off the northern coast of PNG, after living and working amongst them from 1976-1985 as a translator. Jan, with a local Waskia project group, has re-launched the translation project to review previous work on the Bible and hymns, translate more of the Bible and to develop literacy and Bible study resources in the Waskia language for a new generation. Jan has spent several 'month-long' periods back on Karkar since 2007, and has had a team of co-translators return to Auckland with her for periods of work based in the parish. The parish supports Jan, the team, and the project, by prayer, practicalities, and finances as part of our 'outreach' focus. The parish magazine 'The Eagle' often carries updates on the project and the team's work. Sarah Murphy - Youth With A Mission, Capetown, South Africa

Sarah left from St Johns to fulfill a calling to ministry work and trained with YWAM, subsequently becoming involved in YWAM Capetown, South Africa. With a background in accounting Sarah inevitably became drawn into the financial management for YWAM there, as well as being involved in running bible study groups in the Nyanga Township, mentoring girls at the Discipleship Training School, and sharing the gospel with others in the city and surrounding region. The parish support Sarah and her mission through prayer and financial grants and regular updates can be found in the parish magazine 'The Eagle'. Anglican Mission Board - Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia

As a parish we give monthly to support the national and international work of the AMB, who support, among other agencies, the work of CMSNZ - Church Missionary Society NZ, and SOMANZ - Sharing Of Ministries Abroad NZ, working specifically in South America and Africa. The AMB thus supports mission fields in many parts of the world including East Africa, Central and Southern Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Australasia and the Pacific, and South America. Stamps for Missions

The parish also collects used stamps, which can be cut or torn carefully off used envelopes and parcels, leaving a 5mm border of paper. These can be placed in the box in the church foyer and are then processed and sent off to the AMB for sale, raising substantial funds for mission work. Anglican Trust for Women and Children - Auckland

The ATWC is one of Auckland's major charities for women and children. It is also one of the cities oldest, with its origins stretching back to 1858. It supports up to 3000 children and their families/whanau in the Auckland region, through 12 vital programmes at home, in schools and in the community. Every programme is different but each is part of an integrated approach, sharing the same goals to protect, nurture and provide opportunities for children and young people. Aiming, where possible, to reconnect families/whanau, empowering them to take control of their decision making and to enable them to face the future with hope. Money boxes are available in the church foyer for your loose change to support this work. These boxes, or their contents, are collected at Sunday services on the first Sunday of each month and sent onto the ATWC. More can be read at their website - www.awtc.org.nz.



Annual 10% Giving from the Parish

Toward the end of each year the Parish Vestry have a meeting to distribute 10% of the Parish income from donations to worthy causes and organisations in the community, as proposed by parishioners. Last year the parish distributed some $12,000 to support: Anglican Board of Missions; Waskia Project; Waitemata Hospital Chaplains; Summer Wine Camp Leaders; Massey University (Albany) Chaplains; Churches Education Commission (local Bible in School programmes); Sarah Murphy (YWAM); Scripture Union Youth Worker; Seasons Grief Support Programme for children (North Shore); and a Russian Church in the Ukraine which the parish has a relational link with through members.
