History - St John the Evangelist Church, Campbell’s Bay

1929 We were part of Takapuna Parish. Mrs Matilda Cuttle held services in her home at 317 Beach Road, Campbell’s Bay.


1940 Mrs Lewin gave a piece of land, Section 327 Beach Road, for a Church in Campbell’s Bay. Revd H. Sinclair, Revd D.S. Millar and then Revd Geoffrey L Maffey cared for us pastorally


1942 Sunday 27 December, the feast day of St John the Evangelist, the Church completed and dedicated by Bishop Simpkin.


1950 ADDITIONS: Church extended and new entrance with steps on the north side . Turret and bell replaced, designed by Walter Vine.

1953 The Revd Richard Talbot inducted Vicar of the Parochial District of East Coast Bays with St Mary’s -by-the-Sea, Torbay; St Anne’s, Browns Bay; St-John’s-by-the-Sea, Campbell’s Bay and the Outram Hall, Murrays Bay. Church House, Beach Road, Browns Bay was purchased.

1957 The Revd Charles Walter Kent-Johnston became Vicar. New Vicarage in Sunrise Avenue purchased. Young Wives Group


1960 ADDITIONS: 1962 Hall arrived.




1966 The Revd J G Heath became Vicar.



1969 Church extended to an L shape. Vestry and Office added.


1970 1973 The Revd John Powell inducted as Vicar of St John’s Campbell’s Bay when the Parochial district was separated from the Northern East Coast Bays.


1974 The Revd John Zimmerman instituted as Vicar.


1983 Church raised and moved towards the street. New entrance, foyer, lounge, and meeting rooms added.


1984 dedicated by Bishop Edward Buckle .


1987 The Revd Loma Balfour became Vicar.


1990 ADDITION:. Sanctuary built. Dedicated Easter Day by Bishop Edward Buckle. Kitchen built.


1999 Memorial Garden designed and built by Eric Martin.


1993 The Revd Barrie Graves appointed Vicar. St John’s 50th Jubilee.


1993 St John’s 50th Jubilee


1995 The Revd Ian Hanley inducted as Vicar.


1996 Church Consecrated by Bishop Bruce Moore.


2001 the Revd Shann Craig ordained Deacon Assistant, Priest Assistant 2002


2003 The Revds Carole and Michael Hughes instituted 12 February as Co-Vicars.


2005-2007 The Revd Richard Vialoux appointed Curate


2005 The Revd Ann Mellor became Deacon Assistant, 2009 Priest Assistant

2007 Revd Isabel Mordecai became Deacon Assistant, 2009 Priest Assistant

2009 Youth Centre underneath church built and opened. Hall facilities upgraded and opened, Carol Hughes becomes Vicar of parish. Michael Hughes becomes Priest Associate
